Day 91 – Busy busy busy

December 20, 2009 Leave a comment

Today didn’t go as planned but hey stuff like this happens. On the way out for a sunrise image I managed to do two pirouettes in the car within a few miles of starting the engine. Recovered without problems I decided to turn beck and wait for a safer sunset option. In the meantime I went and did all the Christmas food shopping and the last of my present shopping. With it all done with plenty of time to spare I got a call from my sister, her central heating had stopped and wouldn’t restart. That was the end of my plans. A few hours later and I have just gotten home from stripping drown the heating system and locating the problem. A new part is needed so they will have a cold night tonight. With any luck I’ll have it back up and running again in the morning once the hardware store opens, provided I can take a half day from the office. All these skills and abilities I put down to the teachings of my father, he was a man who could put his hand to anything and always explained to me what he was doing. This is certainly the reason I can competently do such a variety of jobs from repairing circuit boards to roofing.
Just aswell I got the image above with my camera phone before starting my shopping.

Day 52 – I want it.

November 11, 2009 3 comments

Todays image has been inspired yet again by Tasra Dawson and her recent blog post – How to Hit Your Target. Thanks Tasra.

I used to be self employed in my early 20s, and the day I stopped was the biggest regret I have ever had since then. I, stupidly, went back to college to become an “Business/IT professional” and those around me were delighted. Now I realize that I went back for others and not for myself. If only I had found the camera back them.

Half way through my degree I got itchy feet to be self employed again and bought the books you see in todays image, and many more to go with them. I spent more time studying them than my college material. Then I had a plan, made all the business contacts I needed to start, I even had a premises, stock ready to order, business bank accounts setup, etc.

Yet again I fell into the trap of listening to others and not following myself. As suggested I went and finished my degree as “it would make me more appealing as a business person”.

Well it’s over two and a half years now since I graduated and I think I’m further away from being self employed than I was when I was nine years old selling my mothers books at the side of the road, unbeknown to her, I think.

So what am I going to do tomorrow? Probably still moan on about the fact that I want to be self employed again but can’t. Why can’t I? What are my excuses for this? Maybe I’m listening to others again. I need to shut up and get on with it. I want it, I’m going reach my target.

I should add that the business I planned to start half way through college was started up by someone else and freaky as it may sound it’s in the exact premises I had chosen. It’s still going strong today, if only I hadn’t of listened to the “wise” ones. I even got to know the owner as I called in one day to joke about the fact that he stole my idea.

As my favorite phrase goes “shit happens, get over it”, but I can’t.

Ok rant over.

Hi boss, I’ll be in tomorrow.

Maybe that could be another part to this challenge. What did I do today to help reach my target?.

Today I spent some time looking at the images on the Best Camera iPhone app that I downloaded yesterday. First app I paid for by the way; cheap skate that I am.

Do you believe that all the images in there were taken with iphones? I have my doubts about a few.

Day 41 – Please don’t do this to my car

Today while out and about I dared to park right next to this wheel clamp. I figured that they would never think someone would be so daring to do it and leave the car alone. I got away with it….. this time. I only used my iphone today.

I was in a local shopping complex today and noticed a photography studio stand with a girl selling photo packages. I took a bit of time looking at the images on the advertising stand. Standing there for a few minutes I was surprise with how many people were signing their kids up for studio sessions. It has me thinking a bit.

It was all high key photography so anyone from Cork will know who I’m on about.

Day 8 – Happy to experiment

I almost didn’t shoot today. In fact I was unable to use my dslr so resorted to using my iphone. The image is an abstract of some autumn leaves overhanging a wall on the Rochestown Road, Cork. I had spotted these leaves a few days ago and planned to shoot them with a tripod mounted dslr and golden hour light striking across them. So much for that plan, at least I had a plan this time. The image is straight from the iphone with just a little crop and auto tone in lightroom. Basically I moved the iphone in a downward motion while releasing the shutter. I must get the Best Camera app that Chase Jarvis released this week. Anyone using it?

Could this be printed large on canvas or would it be better to go back with the dslr and try and repeat it?

Manual Reading

Today I read about AEB – Auto Exposure Bracketing on p97. This is something I used to use quite a bit before I progressed to shooting in manual. Back then I used it as my “fail safe” to make sure I had a choice of exposures when I got back to the the computer. I guess shooting in manual I do the same sort of thing but I feel I have more control over it. I expect I would use the AEB if I was shooting for HDR processing but it’s not a processing technique I like at the moment. I prefer to stick on a set of ND grads and get the range that way, or at least I try too. Anyone have a link to a good resource on using Lee filters or ND grads in general?

Today I looked at some images by Freeman Patterson. I used one of the techniques he suggests for todays image too. I really like Freemans style of photography and his writing also. If anyone is looking for an inspirational book to read then I would suggest looking at “Photography and the art of seeing“. It’s a book I have read a few times and will probably read again. I tend to do that with my books, read them over and over for fear I might have missed something.

Random rant

On the subject of books, can anyone recommend a good abstract photography book for me? I’ve been looking for a good one for some time now but cannot seem to find one.

On another note my self diagnosis of the trapped sciatic nerve was almost right. Turns out I have a prolapsed disc. Can you believe that I went to the doctors this morning and and wait for it…. managed to get an MRI the same day. Now that’s what I call good customer service. No sitting down permitted and a concoction of multicoloured pills to be taken over the next 10 days. I’m allowed to lie flat on the floor and must walk as much as possible. I’m not going to let that stop this path I have set out on though. Come to think of it I don’t have many images from floor level……………….
