I took a walk in Ballincollig park at lunch today looking for some nice ferns to photo but ended up going abstract. I love shooting abstract.

Work toward self employment

I’m still glued to Dane Sanders book. I’ve been trying to figure out which area of photography I would be best suited to.

On another note I went printing mad today. A lot of people have been asking for prints of images I’ve made so I felt it was about time to deliver.

Day 58 – lock me up

I try to get a good image of this lock every couple of days but just cannot get one that I am happy with. It’s not used anymore and is just a feature in the Ballincollig Heritage Park that I go for a walk in during my lunch breaks. Unfortunately it is also surrounded by a safety fence on the other side so getting a good angle on it is difficult. I’m sure you will see more of this as I make more attempts.

I went through the Photographer Of the year 2007 portfolio from Digital Camera magazine. Some day I would like to get an image in there. I haven’t a link to it but there are some stunning images in there. Now to see where I’m going wrong. I tried to lead the eye from the cog in the bottom left along the row of cogs, across the railing, over to the bright leaves and back to the cog. I think I just lead the eye along the line of cogs and straight out of the image.

What do you think?

Work towards self employment

I’ve just been refining yesterdays listing and organizing my project folder. I work in IT project implementations so organizing a project launch and keeping it on track is something I’m supposed to be good at. We’ll see how I go for a project of my own.

Day 30 – Autumn has settled in

Well I was back out for a walk during lunch today and saw this pool of water under the shadow of a tree. If only I had the courage to put on the chest waders I keep in the boot of my car then I would have gone down to the edge of the water. I think I would have looked a bit odd walking through a park in a suit and chest wader with no fishing rod though. I should just get over it and use the stuff I have. Here I am saying “I should have done xyz” again. Oh well, next time, maybe tomorrow. “Maybe tomorrow”, that was what I kept saying to the tuk tuk drivers in Sri Lanka outside my hotels when I went for walks during the day. They always just smiled and said “okay then”. Great place to go see if you ever get the chance.

Day 5

I had a bit of a struggle today in that the the only opportunity I had to take photos was during my lunch break. So I went for a walk in Ballincollig Regional Park.

Without a cloud in the sky I found it very hard going. It’s not a time I would normally go out to take photos that I intend to do anything with but more of a time I go to look for new locations.

When I got to the park I had intended to practice using flare in images but I could not get any. I tried everything but could not get a single bit of flare. I didn’t even have the lens hood on. I knew the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro was good at preventing this but I didn’t think it would be that good. I ended up abandoning that idea after about 15 minutes of head scratching.

So then I went to try out the different metering modes in the camera. Before this project I’d have probably just given up completely after failing with the flare but now I seem to be more willing to experiment. In fact all the images I have been taking for this 365 project are imported to an “Experiments” folder in lightroom.

Manual Reading

So as you have probably guessed I read page 95 of my manual, selecting the metering mode. Most of the time I use evaluative mode and on occasion spot metering. So today I experimented with all modes taking 4 pictures of each scene so I could understand the differences and when best to use each in future. Just as well I read my camera manual page(s) in the car park before work every morning. I’m one of those people who hate to be late for anything so I usually end up with time to kill while I wait for whatever it is I’m early for.

Professional Photographers Images Studied

Today I studied images by Dennis Keeley. I’m not sure of how I feel about his image yet. I really enjoyed his landscape and still life images but not sure of the portraits. I’m not much of a portrait person myself so that probably has a lot to do with it.
